Rug Size Guide: How to Choose for Every Room

Choosing the right rug size is essential for the balance of your interior design. A rug that is too small seems to float, while a well-proportioned rug defines the space.

Living Room: Anchoring the Furniture

The rug should be wider than your sofa. Leave 20 to 30 cm of floor space visible between the rug and the walls.

• Large space / Open space: 300×400 cm or larger. All furniture legs rest on the rug.
  

• Standard size: 250×350 cm. The front legs of the sofa are on the rug, the back legs are outside.
  

• Small living room / Studio: 160×230 cm. Placed only under the coffee table.
  
  

Dining Room: Chair Comfort

The rug should accommodate the table and chairs, even when they are pushed back. Allow for an overhang of 60 to 70 cm beyond the tabletop.

• Table for 4 people: 200×200 cm (round) or 200×290 cm (rectangular).
  

• Table for 6 people: 240×330 cm or 250×350 cm.
  

• Table for 8 people and more: 300×400 cm or larger.
  
  

Bedroom: A Soft Wake-Up

Leave at least 50 cm of rug extending beyond each side of the bed.

• Double/Queen Bed (160×200 cm): 250×350 cm (full coverage) or 200×290 cm (placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed).
  

• King Bed (180×200 cm+): 300×400 cm or two 70×200 cm bed runners on each side.
  

• Single Bed (90×200 cm): 120×180 cm or a 70×200 cm walkway along the side.
  
  

Hallways and Passageways

• Runners: Standard width of 80 cm. Leave 10 to 15 cm of floor visible on each side. Open spaces: Use separate rugs to define areas (reading nook, dining room, office).
  
  

Measuring tip: The newspaper method

If you're unsure, use old newspapers to simulate the rug's dimensions on the floor. Use a ruler to trace the exact outline. This physical template allows you to visualize the actual footprint before purchasing.

Expert tip: When in doubt, choose the larger size. A generously sized rug visually enlarges the room, while a rug that is too small shrinks the space.
